Teamwork and creativity at the start of training

Team spirit, creativity and skilled craftsmanship – the Drum Challenge is a special project for trainees that features all these attributes. In the first year of their apprenticeships, the trainees developed and built a device that was inspired by the strongman attraction High Strikers (called “Hau den Lukas” at the Munich beer festival). It was a challenge that demanded technical know-how and the ability to work as a team. Projects like this at the start of the apprenticeship help the trainees to get to know each other and promote team spirit and shared successes. The Drum Challenge demonstrates how important it is to cooperate and support each other – values that are important to us right from the start.

Our trainees carry out a joint project every year and it is something that develops team spirit and technical knowledge. The Drum Challenge is an innovative combination of music and technology. An LED display shows the force with which the drum is hit. The level rises depending on the force with which the drum is struck. Even if the drum is not hit directly, the LED display responds to music and lights up in line with the rhythm. The project gives our trainees an opportunity to get to grips with topics such as mechatronics, sensor technology and lighting control.  Here it is not just about technical knowledge but also working together as a team.

Apart from its educational role, the Drum Challenge is regularly presented at trade shows, where visitors can try their luck and experience the technology as they play the game. Some components had to be made specially and these were produced using 3D printing. This shows how modern manufacturing techniques can be used successfully even during training. By working together on this project, our trainees gain valuable experience and develop a deep understanding of how various technical features operate together.
